What is Family Day Care (KTP)?

Family day care (Kindertagespflege – KTP) is a form of childcare for children under the age of 3, in which a qualified childminder (commonly referred to as a "day mother" or "day father") looks after one or more children either in their own home, the parents’ home, or in rented premises. This form of care is an alternative to a daycare center (Kita) and offers many advantages, especially for families seeking flexible, home-like childcare. In addition, care outside of regular hours (before or after Kita or school) can be provided for children up to 14 years of age.

Goals of Family Day Care

The main goal of family day care is to support the development of children while parents are at work or otherwise occupied. Childminders promote children's emotional, social, and cognitive development by offering them security, safety, and stimulating learning opportunities.

Advantages of Family Day Care

Home-like environment:
Children are cared for in a home setting that is often calmer and more familiar than a large institution. A key advantage of family day care is the low child-to-caregiver ratio—no more than 5 children (or up to 9 in group settings).
As a result, relationships among the children are usually deeper and more meaningful than in larger daycare centers. Their social interactions often resemble sibling-like relationships.

Close bonds naturally form due to the smaller number of people involved. These strong connections are crucial for developing healthy self-esteem. Thanks to the small group size, caregivers can respond to conflicts with individual attention. The significantly lower noise levels also positively affect the stress levels of everyone involved.

Flexible care
Childminders often offer flexible care models, such as for shift workers or single parents—something that’s not always possible in traditional daycare centers.

Strong attachment to the caregiver:
Children have a consistent caregiver, fostering stable relationships and a sense of trust.

The parental fees for family day care are equivalent to those for daycare centers, meaning families do not face financial disadvantages when choosing this form of care.

Conclusion

Family day care is a valuable and flexible form of childcare that allows for close, personal care during the early years of a child’s life. It benefits not only working parents but also supports children’s development in a secure and nurturing environment.

Individual Care

In family day care, a maximum of five children are looked after at the same time, allowing for individualized support. The small group size creates a familiar and comfortable atmosphere for children. Additionally, there is an option called Großtagespflege (group day care), where two to three childminders care for up to nine children together.

Educational Partnership

Childminders work closely with parents to coordinate educational and developmental goals. This collaboration ensures consistent and well-aligned support for the child.
